Wolfgang Gassner was born in Erlangen, Germany in 1960. After completing his studies in material sciences and serving for 2 years as project manager for the department of material sciences at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, he joined Siemens AG in Munich in 1988.
In his PhD thesis he developed and ultimately invented ceramic x-ray devices (scintillators). It was during this time that he first became interested in patent law. In 1991 Dr. Gassner began his education to become a patent lawyer at a patent law firm in Munich. His main responsibility there was protecting the inventions of a group of foreign companies. In 1993 Gassner worked in the patent department of the French glass company Saint Gobain S.A. in Paris.
In 1994 Gassner passed the patent bar exam in Munich. He is admitted to practice in Germany representing at the Court of Justice in litigation and trademark violation proceedings. He is also a representative at the European Patent Office in Munich and at the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market of the European Community in Alicante, Spain (European Trade Mark Office). In addition, he is an expert recommended by the GPTMO in estimating the value of patents and patent applications.
He freelanced for several ip law firms in Munich and Nuremberg before founding his own law firm in 1996 from which the present partnership "Dr. Gassner & Partner" was formed in 2002. The main focus of the law firm "Dr. Gassner & Partner" is the representation of patent applications in areas of engineering, biotechnology and medical technology as well as litigation due to the infringement of patent and trademark rights.
